Health Insurance Policy Changes
source : Green River Community College

Our international students good health is very important and is essential for achieving their educational goals.  The health care system in the U.S. is very different from many countries.  In the U.S., each individual pays his or her own medical expenses, which can be very expensive.  While studying at Green River Community College, all international students are required to have medical insurance.  Students may either show proof of their own insurance or purchase the GRCC insurance offered through LewerMark Plus for a fee of $150 per quarter.  Students can get a detailed brochure on the LewerMark Plus medical benefits plan for international students from the Student Resource Center in the International Programs office.

It has come to our attention that many of the students choosing to purchase their own health insurance from their home country do not have sufficient coverage.  Since we feel a strong responsibility to protect the health and safety of our international students, we adopted Minimum Requirements of Insurance Coverage (detailed below) for students who choose to purchase their own insurance.

Minimum Requirements of Insurance Coverage If students have health insurance from their home country, they must show us a copy of the health insurance policy.  The policy must be in English and must meet the following requirements:

-Medical coverage per accident or sickness of at least $50,000
-Deductible per accident or sickness of no more than $100
-Repatriation coverage of at least $10,000
-Insurance must be acceptable at all U.S. medical facilities

Proof of coverage Beginning winter quarter 2002, students will automatically be charged $150 for LewerMark Plus health insurance when they register for classes.  It is the student's responsibility to provide proof of adequate health insurance, based on the Minimum Requirements listed above, in order to have the $150 charge waived and removed.  Students must provide a copy of their health insurance policy to an International Student Advisor or the IESL Program Coordinator by the 10th day of the quarter.
